Bruce Stebner tells people he was “born with crayons in his hand,” and that isn’t far from the truth. By the time he was a teenager, he was making pottery with the potter’s wheel and kiln his father built for him. After attending art school, he spent time as an interpretive craftsman in the museum world. There, he investigated both salt-glazed and wood fired pottery techniques. This led to his 30 year career as a studio potter. For the past 18 years he has focused his interest in ceramics on making faience-painted pottery. His murals grace homes around the country. His oils capture a joy which borders on the naive through his use of color and seemingly impulsive, rhythmic brush strokes. His work has been featured in Country Living, Country Home, The Cleveland Plain Dealer, the Akron Beacon Journal, and the Chicago Tribune. His pottery has been shown at the Mansfield Art Museum and Akron Art Museum, and has been made available for sale at the Museum of American Folk Art, New York.
